Download the methods here: https://tnc.app.box.com/s/ju4r1ijiz7f4jzarggyone4tyfpeo880
The general protection status is split into four categories: 1. Core protected land: This is one potential definition of protected lands. The lands categorized as protected include: International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Protected Area Categories I-VI lands, California Protected Areas Database (CPAD) Gap Status 1 and 2 lands, Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, conservation easements from the California Conservation Easement Database (CCED), and California State Parks. The IUCN categories included are: (Ia) Strict Nature Reserve, (Ib) Wilderness Area, (II) National Parks, (III) Natural Monument or Feature, (IV) Habitat/Species Management Area, (V) Protected Landcape/Seascape, (VI) Protected area with sustainable use of natural resources (visit https://www.iucn.org/theme/protected-areas/about/protected-area-categories for more information). CPAD includes gap status codes 1 and 2, lands managed for biodiversity (Learn more information at https://www.calands.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/CPAD-2020a-Database-Manual.pdf). The description of conservation easements can be found at https://www.calands.org/cced/. 2. Public land managed for multiple uses: The lands this dataset categorizes as public land managed for multiple uses include:’Other Conservation Areas’ (PAD-US IUCN Category), Additional GAP Status 3 lands (CPAD), and Local Conservation Areas (i.e. lands with an Unassigned IUCN Category, greater than 250 acres with any of the following Designation Types: "Local Recreation Area", "Local Park", "Conservation Area", or "Local Conservation Area" and which did not contain the word ‘Golf” in the Unit Name field.
3. Private and unprotected government land: The lands this dataset categorized as private and unprotected government lands include lands not in the PAD-US, CPAD, or CCED database, from PAD-US that have an ‘Unassigned’ IUCN category and which are not state parks, local conservation areas (as defined above), US Department of Defense lands, indiginous lands, or were determined to be private inholdlings.
4. Other: Includes urban areas [FVEG 2015], U.S. Department of Defense lands (PAD-US), and tribal lands (California BLM data 2014)
